Nonograms originated from Japanese puzzle magazines and were initially known as pic-a-pix. The concept was created by Non Ishida, who published three picture grid puzzles in 1988 under the name "Window Art Puzzles". Subsequently, in 1990, James Dalgety from the UK coined the term "Nonograms" based on Non Ishida's work, and it gained popularity when The Sunday Telegraph started publishing them on a weekly basis.
In Japanese nonograms, the numbers serve as a form of discrete tomography that indicates the number of filled-in squares in each row or column. For example, a clue of "4 8 3" would signify sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, respectively, with at least one blank space between successive groups. Solving Japanese nonograms requires determining which squares should be filled and which should be empty.
While these puzzles are typically black and white, representing binary images, they can also be colored. If colored, the number clues are likewise colored to indicate the corresponding square's color. In such cases, two differently colored numbers may have a space in between them. For instance, a black four followed by a red two could mean four black boxes, some empty spaces, followed immediately by two red boxes.
Hanjie puzzles do not have a theoretical limit on size and are not restricted to square layouts.
Griddlers were first introduced in Japan in 1995 as handheld electronic toys under the name "Picross - Picture Crossword".
